Zlín’s ERC counter tops media vote

30. 12. 2017 - Barum Czech Rally Zlín

Media representatives from countries including Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal and the UK have voted Barum Czech Rally Zlín as their event of the 2017 FIA European Rally Championship season.

The all-Tarmac contest, a mainstay of the ERC since its restructuring in 2004, headed the Azores Airlines Rallye and Rally di Roma Capitale in a close vote.

Based in the South Moravian university city of Zlín, 300 kilometres south of the Czech capital Prague, this is a rally like no other due to the bumpy and sometimes broken nature of the road surface. To add to the challenge, several stages feature high-speed blasts through forests and intermittent showers are always possible. While the weather might be hard to predict, huge numbers of fans follow the action, especially on the opening night-time Zlín superspecial stage.

This year's running proved notable for several reasons: Marijan Griebel became the inaugural ERC Junior Under 28 champion, Aleks Zawada spun and won in ERC Junior Under 27, while home hero Jan Kopecký (pictured) bagged his sixth outright victory.
